Preparing for Hurricane Irene

When confronted with an impending storm such as the forecasted Hurricane Irene, many companies find themselves vulnerable and unprepared for loss. This is particularly true in these difficult economic times when there is a greater dependency on a single source location for production capacity, inventory storage, third-party data centers, etc.  Additionally, many mid-size companies have not implemented, or even created, a comprehensive business continuity plan to rely on in such instances.

With Hurricane Irene gathering strength and making its way up the East Coast, now is a good time to review your facility’s emergency plan and ensure that copies are accessible off site. Here are other steps to take once a hurricane WATCH is issued:

      • Evacuate all non-essential personnel.
      • Prepare to cover all window and doors with shielding material.
      • Move fuel and service vehicles and generators inside the building or to a safe location.
      • Brace all signs, tanks and roof equipment.
      • Protect vital records against flooding and wind.
      • Secure back-up records off site, away from targeted area.

If a hurricane WARNING is issued, here are some additional actions to consider:

      • Patrol facilities, as long as it is safe to do so.
      • Check for leaks and fire protection impairment.
      • Shut off valves when pipes have broken.
      • Complete emergency repairs that are safe to perform.
      • Move to safe area before cut off by flood water, use sand bags if necessary.

These action items are practical risk management steps that we would recommend any company implement. If however you do experience a loss, we encourage you to promptly contact our claims group and we will assist you in reporting your claim or answering your questions. For more information on submitting a claim, visit our website.

And above all, please stay safe.
